What: Western Regional Youth Event (WRYE)
WRYE is a regional gathering of UCC youth, who have graduated 7th grade through 12th grade. WRYE
happens every four years, alternating with Synod and the National Youth Event (NYE). The western
region is vast geographically, stretching from Montana down to El Paso, Texas, and west to Hawaii. We
anticipate having 350-400 youth and chaperones attend in 2014. Together, we will spend a day engaged
in workshops, another day working on service projects, and a day exploring the locale in a fun way.
Worship bookends our days, with good music and inspirational speakers. There’s time to play, and time
in small groups!
The event is open to youth in 7th – 12th grade. Typically the Pacific Northwest Conference, when
travelling to this event, has made the choice to only take upcoming 9th – outgoing 12th graders due to
the travelling and the fact that we were staying on college campuses. Each church is invited to make the
choice best for their group/church which ages (within the 7th – 12th grade range) they will send to this
When: June 29 – July 3, 2014
We begin Sunday evening, June 29, with dinner. Anticipate arriving from 2pm to 5pm. We will close our
formal program late in the evening of July 2. The event ends with an optional breakfast on July 3.
Where: Seattle University Campus
Seattle University is located in the Capitol Hill area of Seattle. We will be staying in dorms and using their
auditorium and classroom spaces for this event. Seattle University has deep values of environmental
justice and strives to be a zero waste campus. Their values deeply match the UCC’s values in this way
and we are excited about what this location and the faith and service commitment of the school provide
us as a backdrop to our event.
Attending a wider church event allows the youth to have a sense of belonging to something much
bigger than just their local church. Giving our youth this experience allows them to identify not just with
their church, but with the wider UCC. The youth will engage in workshops, worship services, service
project and days of fun that will allow them to make great connections with friends from near and far.
They will make life-long friendships! Many have found that youth who have participated in these larger
gatherings of the UCC are often still engaged and serving throughout the denomination and in our
The theme for this event is: Being Sent Out – The Great Commissioning.
We’re using the scriptures in
Luke 9:1-6 and John 20:19-22 to frame our time together. This means that our workshop day will focus
on faith-deepening and how our beliefs compel us to act in the world. Our service day will be shaped by
an understanding of how faithful people throughout time have been called (or sent) out into their
communities to make a difference. Our fun day will begin with an understanding of being pilgrims in the
world rather than simply tourists – and will end with a closing worship that re-defines what it means to
be a part of the Great Commission in our time – being sent out to bring peace and the love of God into
