Conference Board of Directors Calls the Rev. Dr. Carlos Correa as Associate Conference Minister for Border and Latino Ministries

Carlos Correa

Our Conference Board of Directors has called the Rev. Dr. Carlos Correa as Associate Conference Minister for Border and Latino Ministries. The position has been made possible through a partnership between the UCC Justice and Witness Ministries Office (JWM) and our Conference leadership. Carlos has been serving as Director for the Centro Romero in San Ysidro and will continue serving in that ministry. In addition, he will be the Conference liaison with our Latino churches and pastors. This new position aligns Centro Romero and Carlos under the Conference leadership and will allow us to fully develop the ministry Carlos has been providing.  We thank JWM for their financial support to this new concept as they will be providing 75% of Carlos' salary and benefits as well as continued support to the cost of the Romero Center programs.  Dr. Correa will assume his new position on January 1, 2011 and will be available to visit congregations at that time.

Conference Board of Directors Approves Pilot Program

Russ Smethers
Russ Smethers

In keeping with our concept of "building the plane while flying it," our Board of Directors has unanimously approved the position of "Coordinator of Parish Activities." This is pilot program led by Russ Smethers, a member of First Congregational Church in Las Vegas. The program is under the supervision of Rev. Dave Pomeroy, pastor at First Congregational Church. The goal of this program is "bring about closer communication and cooperation between UCC congregations located in a specific geographical area in order to enhance their cooperative mission and the visibility of the UCC within that area." Russ will act as a focal point for the churches to address new ideas and help resolve problems that arise in planning events and/or communicating with fellow UCC Churches.  This is a volunteer position at this time.  Our goal is to test the concept in the Las Vegas area before launching it throughout our Conference. We thank Russ and Dave for their dedication and hard work!

Distinguished Lay Woman Awards

Congratulations to the following three outstanding leaders who were selected for the UCC 2011 Distinguish Lay Woman Award:  Michiko Manacop-Reyes (Filipino-American, UCC), Diana Owings (Diamond Bar, UCC) and Janet Vandevender (Claremont, UCC). They will represent our Conference and will be honored at the 2011 UCC Synod in Tampa, Fl.  This Conference is blessed to have so many gifted leaders and the selection process was not easy as we received various nominations, all worthy to be selected.  Each nominee will be honored at Annual Gathering scheduled for June 3-4, 2011. Photos and a summary of their achievements will be posted on our website in the near future. Again, thank you to all the nominees for you contribution to our Conference. You are a blessing to all of us!
