Clergy Criminal Background Checks

On behalf of the United Church of Christ and the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), Don Clark, Nationwide Special Counsel, has negotiated a new five-year contract with Oxford Document Management (the firm we use for criminal background checks that accompany ministerial profiles). While we have not had a price increase in the three years we've used Oxford, costs have increased. Therefore, it is now necessary to make an adjustment. The new negotiated rate for a criminal background check will increase from $140 to $160, effective January 1, 2011. Congregations are encouraged to reimburse the cost of the Criminal Background Check once a Settled Pastor has been called.

October 30 deadline for FTE Grants for Pastoral Internships

The Fund for Theological Education, through its "Calling Congregations" initiative, seeks to build an ecumenical community of congregations and church-related organizations committed to the cause of cultivating future pastoral leaders. To support them, "Calling Congregations" developed VocationCARE (, as a means by which everyone - particularly young people exploring Christian vocation and the call to pastoral ministry - are more likely to hear, respond to, and serve God's call in their lives.

From the National Office of Parish Life and Leadership:

Occasionally, we hear about churches that minister in various ways to service members, veterans, and their families. We also hear from congregations that would like to engage in this type of ministry, but they aren't quite sure how to help.

Do you know of congregations in your Association/Conference that minister to these groups? If so, I would appreciate your help in identifying these congregations. I would like to contact them and learn what they are doing. Their ideas may be useful to other congregations that are looking for ways to offer similar ministries in their churches and communities. We'd like to share this information. Please email information to Rev. John Gundlach, Minister for Government and Professional Chaplaincies, at
