Connections from Felix

Dear Friends,

"Friend-Raiser Dinner", October 15

Our Conference will host a "Friend-Raiser" Dinner on Saturday, October 15 at 5 p.m. at Ruth Chris in Irvine.  The purpose of this dinner is to share the work the UCC has been doing and the future of our denomination and our Conference. We have invited the Rev. J. Bennett Guess, UCC Executive Minister for Local Church Minister, who will share with us his excitement about what it means to be a member in the United Church of Christ. We have selected key leaders, present and future "Friends of the Conference" to be in attendance.  We still have some spaces available. If you know of anyone who might be interested in becoming a "Friend of the Conference" or for more information, please contact Keith Clark at: clark@scncucc.org

General Synod 29 Volunteer Rally

We are looking for 300 volunteers to assist with the work of General Synod 29. To that effect, the Conference will be hosting a volunteer rally on Saturday and Sunday, October 15-16. These will be two days in which we will share the excitement that comes with hosting General Synod. Our guest speaker for both events is the Rev. J. Bennett Guess, UCC Executive Minister for Local Church Ministries. The Saturday event will be held at Lincoln Memorial, UCC in Los Angeles from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. On Sunday, we will meet at the United Church of Christ of La Mesa from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. and it will be a repeat of Saturday.

Trip to Samoa

A delegation from this Conference visited Samoa, September 9-16. Our goal was to learn more about the Samoan culture and meet with the seminaries and leadership of the Congregational Church in both, American and Western Samoan. The UCC doesn't have a formal "partnership" with the Congregational Christian Church in Samoa (Western Samoa). However, our denomination has ties with the churches in American Samoa. Our Conference has member congregations from both. We were able to initiate conversations with the leadership and seminary in Western Samoa and will report back to our National office about our findings. We were greatly impressed by the quality of the theological education offered at both seminaries and the efforts to continue to ordain women, especially in American Samoa. We ask for your prayers as we continue to strengthen our relationship with our Samoan brothers and sisters. The members of our delegation were: Foai Tanuvasa (Conference Moderator), the Rev. Dr. Elder Emeritus Ioane Mailo (CCAS), the Rev. Dr. Elder Liki Tiatia (CCCS), the Rev. Marcia Hoffman (Chair, Section A, C&M, Central Association), the Rev. Sepulona Tanuvasa (Chair, Samoan Ministry Table), Elder Deacon Tufono Taliulu (Samoan Ministry Table), the Rev. Dr. Randy Walker (Professor, PSR), Sherry Villanueva and myself.

Newest ONA Churches

Our congratulations to the United Church of Christ of La Mesa and the First Congregational Church of Bakersfield for becoming our newest ONA congregations! UCCLM was officially listed as of September 21 and became the 964th ONA church in the UCC. The First Congregational Church of Bakersfield was officially listed as of September 23 and it is the 966th ONA church in the UCC.

We rejoice with both congregations in their efforts to show an extravagant welcome to all of God's children!

Death of a Retired UCC Pastor

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of the Rev. Dr.  Deborah Bruce Truncale.  Deborah died on September 4th.  Deborah worked as Pulpit Supply Preacher in this conference and was a Synod delebage in the 1980's.  A memorial service will be held at Neighborhood Congregational Church, Laguna Beach on October 9, 2011 at 12:30 p.m.
