Here is what one IKC church is sending to its members: "Ever
think 'if only I had some extra money,' money that wasn't already
committed, then I'd be able to give more generously to the needy, to
the causes that support social justice'? Well, it may be the time.
In early May the federal government, to stimulate the economy, will
start issuing refund checks. While amounts vary, checks could be up
to $600 for some adults and $300 for children and others. The
government wants us to spend the money on ourselves. The financial
gurus want us to save it or invest it. But what might Jesus want us
to do?"
"Collectively, it is estimated that members and children of our
UCC church will be receiving around $250,000. What will we do? Will
we shop till we drop or will we take some extravagant amount and
give to those who really need it to survive? We would like to
propose that all who are part of our faith community, who are not
faced with a financial crisis, consider giving away some, or all, of
this money to the poor, the homeless, the hungry and to
organizations working to change the systemic causes of such
conditions and bring about social justice. The Church Council
supports this opportunity to share, and encourages you to
prayerfully consider the possibilities."
"This is not a plea for money to go to our church needs. This
is a plea for prayerful consideration of willing, loving,
extravagant giving to those we are called to consider as the Christ
knocking at our door."
